Election, winner of the 2005 HK film awards (beating Infernal Affairs II for Best Pictures) is a crime drama centered on a democratic election within an organized crime society. Nominated for Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival for director Johnny To.

The movie tells the story of how a Triad Society in Hong Kong chooses their new leader, or Chairman. Up for the job are Lok (Simon Yam), a seemingly mild-mannered, intelligent gangster and single parent to a young teen, and the explosive Big D (Tony Leung Ka Fai), who wants the job at all costs. Bribery, bullying, and other means of extorting votes from the elder Triads have commenced in full as the story begins. At one point, the movie traces the background of the organized crime society (The Triads) which was “..originally a quasi-religious, patriotic organisations created to liberate the Chinese from foreign oppressors…”.
