In September 2002 the President of the Gabonese Republic announced the creation of 13 national parks that would cover over 30,000 square kilometres, 11% of the country’s land surface. This historic event marked a huge leap forward in the protection of the Congolese rainforests and pristine coastal wetlands that still clothe this small west African country, home to Forest Elephants, Sitatunga, numerous birds and thousands of large primates, in particular Lowland Gorilla and Chimpanzee. A high standard of living maintained by an active petroleum industry has meant less pressure on the country’s other natural resources, such as timber, and much of Gabon's forest and wildlife remains relatively intact. You will be one of the very first to discover the wealth of wildlife that abounds here and discover at first hand why Gabon is often referred to as ‘Africa’s last Eden’.
