As his first assignment, lieutenant Drogo is sent to an isolated fortress on the borders of a desert and of a range of high mountains. A fascinating whatsit never released in the United States, Valerio Zurlini's 1976 adaptation of the revered 1938 Dino Buzzati novel by the same name is a massive post-Lean epic—a colonialist drama, shot in widescreen on location, and with an international cast including Jean-Louis Trintignant, Max von Sydow, Fernando Rey, Philippe Noiret, and Vittorio Gassman—that's actually about the absence of event and consequence. It may be the grandest and most lavish existentialist parable ever made. A baby-faced soldier (Jacques Perrin) is assigned to the outskirts of an unspecified empire—specifically, to a massive, ancient fortress beyond which lies only the endless desert and "the Tartars," the Orwellian enemy that never appears, but must be prepared for at all times. Time passes in an hourglass; the Old World officers living rather poshly inside are either going slowly insane or praying for reassignment. Employing all of the accoutrements of colonialism as metaphors for futile- destiny despair and yet visually resembling an expensive international co-production in which something big always seems to be on the verge of happening, Zurlini's movie also boasts a secret weapon like none other: the Bam Citadel. Shot entirely within the 2,000-year-old Persian city—decimated forever in the 2003 earthquake—Zurlini's film is fascinating both as a modernist flourish set in a primeval reality, and as a historical record.

Julian Gilbey's fact-based crime saga Rise of the Footsoldier traces one man's meteoric ascension from a lucrative football career, through the ranks of organized crime, to the status of Britain's most omnipotent drug lord. September Dawn sets a fictional love story against a pseudo-historical version of an actual tragedy of the Mountain Meadows massacre of 11.September. 1857, when a wagon train of emigrants was attacked by a small group of Mormon militiamen and members of the Paiute tribe; more than 120 men, women, and children were killed. The movie stars Jon Voight as Jacob Samuelson, Terence Stamp as Brigham Young, and Jon Gries as John D. Lee.

This independently produced drama is based on historical fact: In 1857, Mormon settlers, in an area near Cedar City, massacred 120 people bound for California. Jon Voight plays Jacob Samuelson, a paranoid religious zealot whose initial hostility to the settlers is inspired partly by women wearing pants, and the fact that some of them come from Missouri (a state that drove the Mormons out). From this snowballs a fury of religion-based intolerance that leads to the historic Mountain Meadows Massacre of, prophetically enough, September 11th. Director Christopher Cain (YOUNG GUNS) shows skill in creating period detail and a sense of inescapable dread, even amidst the wide open spaces of the beautiful mountainous locations. Deep shadows caused by the stark sunshine contrast with lots of tense, sweaty close-ups of fear-stricken and hateful faces. Terence Stamp shows up as the Church of Latter Day Saints leader Brigham Young, who gets involved in the decision to massacre the settlers (a controversial detail, debated to this day). Offsetting the unease is a Romeo-and-Juliet-style romance between one of Samuelson's handsome young sons (Trent Ford) and Emily (Tamara Hope), a beautiful red-headed maiden from the wagon train. A nice score of acoustic guitars and strings blends suspense and rustic breeziness..~Rotten Tomatoes~
