Michele(Giuseppe Cristiano) is 10 year old boy who lives near a wheat field with his family. He and his younger sister Maria play with their friends in these fields, until one day Michele discovers a boy of his age who is hidden in an underground cave. First he becomes frightened, but later worries about the boy and starts to feed and give water to him regularly. One night, Michele wakes up and hears his father and his friends talking about a kidnapped boy called Filippo, and when he sees Filippo's picture in TV he immediately realises that he is the boy he found in the cave.

This visually dazzling thriller set in the extreme south of Italy during the summer gazes at the world through the eyes of Michele (Giuseppe Cristiano), a 10-year-old boy living with his little sister and parents in a tiny impoverished village. Adapted from Niccolò Ammaniti's lean, best-selling novel about a 1978 kidnapping, this coming-of-age tale methodically peels away Michele's protective blinders. One day he discovers and eventually befriends Filippo (Mattia Di Pierro), a half-blind, frighteningly disheveled boy his own age who is buried in a pit next to an abandoned house where Michele and his friends play daredevil games. Filippo turns out to have been kidnapped. Even after Michele's father (Dino Abbrescia) is revealed to be one of the kidnappers and the boy's innocence has been shattered, the movie refuses to go for cheap, vicious thrills and continues to view the adults through the curtain of Michele's trust.

Michele loves his stern parents but is too young to unscramble all their emotional signals. He observes the pain, conflict and embarrassment of his beautiful young mother, Anna (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), without deciphering its components.

Because the movie refuses to betray Michele's trust, it offers up no monsters to be slain, only poor, desperate people to pity and, in some cases, fear. Even as the truth of a child's real-life nightmare sinks in, ''I'm Not Scared'' remains warm-blooded, and the viewer, put in Michele's position, is left, like him, clutching at whatever beauty can be salvaged from a landscape that was once synonymous with an idyllic but lost innocence.
